A New Tradition Takes Flight in Southaven

Join us for the first annual North Mississippi Hummingbird Festival, happening Saturday, September 13, at Snowden Grove Park in Southaven, Mississippi.

This new event honors the incredible journey of the ruby-throated hummingbird as it migrates through our region on its way to Mexico and South America. Thousands of these dazzling birds pass through North Mississippi during their fall migration, and Southaven is planting the seeds—literally and figuratively—to welcome them in a big way.

Thanks to the vision of Alderman John David Wheeler and the support of city leaders, Southaven is transforming the wooded areas near the Field of Dreams playground into a haven for hummingbirds, filled with nectar-rich flowers and feeders. Though the habitat may not be in full bloom this year, the excitement is already in the air!

The festival will feature:

  • Educational speakers and conservation groups

  • Arts & crafts vendors

  • Family-friendly activities

  • Food trucks & refreshments

  • Nature-themed entertainment

Whether you’re a bird enthusiast, nature lover, or simply looking for a fun weekend outdoors, the North Mississippi Hummingbird Festival is an event for all ages.

Let’s make this new tradition soar!

June Wheeler Memorial Hummingbird Garden

We are honored to announce that the hummingbird garden at Snowden Grove will now be known as The June Wheeler Memorial Hummingbird Garden at Snowden Park.

June Wheeler was a master gardener for over 20 years, known for her remarkable ability to nurture plants and flowers with a “green thumb” that brought beauty to every garden she touched. Her deep knowledge of plants and birds made her a beloved figure in our community, and she cherished sharing her expertise with others.

She had a special fondness for birdwatching—especially hummingbirds—whose vibrant presence mirrored her own gentle and caring nature. This garden will be reserved as a special place to help nurture that same love for gardening and birding—particularly the joy of hummingbirds—that June so beautifully embodied.

With its blooming flowers and the hum of tiny wings, the June Wheeler Memorial Hummingbird Garden will stand as a living tribute to her love for nature and the lasting impact she had on everyone fortunate enough to have known her.

We invite you to visit the June Wheeler Memorial Hummingbird Garden and experience the beauty she inspired.
